Sergeant Clyde A. Thomason (May 23, 1914 – August 17, 1942) was a United States Marine who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for heroism at the cost of his life while leading an assault during the raid on Makin Island on August 17, 1942. Thomason was the first enlisted Marine to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II.
The Sgt. Clyde Thomason MOH Detachment #1325 Marine Corps League was originally chartered in February 2009. George Dienhart of Peachtree City, Georgia was the Detachment’s first Commandant. There were 24 charter members of the Detachment. The Detachment was formed to serve Marines in Coweta and Fayette Counties, Georgia.
The name of the Detachment at the time of its charter was the Clyde Thomason Detachment. The Detachment’s name was changed to the Sergeant Clyde Thomason MOH Detachment in November 2012. The name change was to identify Sgt. Thomason’s rank and to honor him as the first enlisted Marine to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War II.
